2007 Kid’s in the Kitchen – March 24th

The Junior League of Battle Creek kicked off its nutrition project with Kids in the Kitchen!  Kids in the Kitchen is part of the Association of Junior League International’s initiative to address the increasing rates of childhood obesity in our country.

“The Junior League of Battle Creek is working to find ways to help our community make healthier choices.  Kids in the Kitchen is just one way to help parents engage their children in making healthy meals and exercising while having fun” said Kate Segal, Chair of the Nutrition Project for the Junior League of Battle Creek.

Children participating in this year’s event had a full morning of activities at Springfield Middle School.  The morning started with Mary Proulx, Lauren Zima and Jenna Lambert from the Battle Creek Family YMCA leading the children through a fun dance exercise routine.  All the kids actively participated and built up an appetite.

Celebrity Chef Sean Kelly with BiCi Bistro then taught the children and their parents how to make healthy pizza and snacks.  With the generous donation of food from Bill Morris and the Hunt Club, each child and parent made their own individual whole wheat pizza topped with fresh vegetable toppings.  While the pizzas were cooking, Chef Kelly helped the children make their own granola snack mix for a healthy snack on-the-go.

To finish out the morning, the children and their parents heard tips on how to make healthy choices everyday from Carol Barr, dietitian with Battle Creek Health System.  To compliment their new knowledge, each child who participated received a Kids in the Kitchen cookbook, insulated lunch sack, dental care packet, and a certificate that encourages them to make healthy choices everyday.

In today’s busy lifestyles, it’s hard to make healthy choices.  One participant, Carolyn Johnson knows just how difficult that can be.  “I very much enjoyed our experience,” said Carolyn Johnson, a grandmother raising her 10-year-old granddaughter. “These types of workshops help to reinforce to both my granddaughter and me the healthy choices we need to make.”

A special thank you to Celebrity Chef Sean Kelly with BiCi Bistro, registered dietician Carol Barr with Battle Creek Health System, Mary Proulx, Lauren Zima and Jenna Lambert from the Battle Creek Family YMCA, Bill Morris and the Hunt Club, Standard Printing, and Bandeen Orthodontics for helping us put this event together.

The Junior League of Battle Creek is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of its members and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  Its purpose is exclusively education and charitable.
