State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC)
The Junior League of Battle Creek is united with
nine Junior Leagues in Michigan under the Michigan State Council of Junior
Leagues (MSC). Each League has one or more representatives that sit on the State Public
Affairs Committee (SPAC). SPAC serves as the advocacy arm for these Leagues and
chooses a focus every two to three years. The current statewide focus is early
childhood education and care.

Past Projects

Junior Theater
1948/49
The
Junior League of Battle Creek established the Children's Theater which later became Junior Theater.
The Battle Creek Junior Theater provides an opportunity for youth
in grades 5 through 9 to participate in a live theatrical or musical
theater performance. Youth throughout the city from all school
districts are eligible to participate and create lasting memories and
friendships while gaining confidence, self worth, team building skills
and self esteem.

Kimball House Museum
1966/67
The Junior League of Battle Creek started the Kimball House Museum.
Kimball House is a Queen Anne style Victorian house museum, which
was built in 1886 as the family home for three generations of
physicians. The museum also serves as Battle Creek’s local history
museum. Several rooms are interpreted as upper middle class Victorian
life and reflect the Kimball family story. There are special exhibit
rooms focusing on the Battle Creek Sanitarium and Sojourner Truth.
Displays of special interest to children and families include the
pioneer room and general store, as well as the servant’s quarters.

Binder Park Zoo Volunteer Program
1978/79
The Junior League of Battle Creek established a volunteer program for the Binder Park Zoo. - Safe Place
1982/83
The Junior League of Battle Creek helped create S.A.F.E. Place. S.A.F.E. Place provides shelter, court advocacy, referrals and comprehensive counseling programs for victims of domestic
violence — women and children who have been physically, verbally, or emotionally abused.

Safety Town
1993/94
Safety Town was offered by the Junior League of Battle Creek and later adopted by Battle Creek Parks and Recreation.
During the session, children will learn by actively participating in
safety lessons. Under the guidance of classroom teachers, police
officers, fire fighters, EMS and other community helpers, children will
learn and practice safe reactions and behaviors before experiencing
these unfamiliar situations in real life.

Kids Fest
1996/97
The Junior League of Battle Creek implemented Kids Fest in collaboration with Battle Creek Health System. Kids'
Fest provides free information to the public on children's health and
wellness issues through activities, giveaways, and guest speakers. Many
community agencies and businesses participate through sponsorship and
interactive booths and kiosks.

Toy Chest lending Library
1997/98
The Junior League of Battle Creek implemented the Toy Chest lending library at Willard LIbrary. The Toy Chest allows children to check out educational toys for a 2-week period.

Baby Think It Over
1999/00
The Junior League of Battle Creek created Baby Think It Over.
This project, which was eventually turned over to the American
Red Cross, was designed to loan computer infant simulators ("babies")
to qualified agencies, schools and organizations for instruction and
training. The purpose was to teach area youth of the
responsibility of caring for a baby, in hopes of lowering the teen
pregnancy rate in Calhoun County.

A Brief History The Service League of Battle Creek was
organized December 3, 1935. The Junior League of Battle Creek was
founded in 1948 and is a member of the Association of Junior League, an
international federation of over 293 leagues in the United States,
Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
